I guess without further knowledge, the OP should just pick up a decoy ticket in a rail station in London. I don't think they have any other reason to go to the HEX station and they could use Oyster to get to their accommodation and to the station to pick up the ticket.
I think if I were doing this, I would book the ticket in advance anyway, as I don't think you can buy a ticket from a machine at say Victoria for a trip that starts at Queenstown Road. You'd have to go to the ticket window, and I"ve often seen lines there when there are none at the machines.
